unusual facts about Kerguelen Islands


Hill County, Montana

The Kerguelen Islands are on the opposite side of the earth from parts of Hill County, while the antipodal points of almost all other places in the United States lie in the Indian Ocean.

They visited Bouvetøya, the Kerguelen Islands, and other islands in the area, before returning to Hamburg, where they arrived on April 30, 1899.

French Antarctic Expedition

In 1772, Kerguelen-Trémarec and the naturalist Jean Guillaume Bruguière sailed to Antarctica in search of the fabled Terra Australis. There he took possession of various territories for France including what would later be called the Kerguelen Islands.

Giant petrel

Both species are restricted to the Southern Hemisphere, and though their distributions overlap greatly with both species breeding on the Prince Edward Islands, Crozet Islands, Kerguelen Islands, Macquarie Island and South Georgia, many Southern Giant Petrel nest further south, with colonies as far south as Antarctica.

Other locations included in this collection are Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora and Mangareva, as well as the less frequented Île Saint-Paul, Macquarie Island, Kerguelen Islands, and the Balleny Islands.

Pringlea antiscorbutica

The species grows on the Heard Island and McDonald, Crozet, Prince Edward and Kerguelen Islands.

Sooty Albatross

This albatross nests on islands in the southern Atlantic Ocean (Gough Island and the Tristan da Cunha group) and Indian Ocean (Prince Edward Island, Marion Island, the Crozet Islands, Amsterdam Island, and Kerguelen Islands).
