The county team were also in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship final in 1953; local players Gene Morgan and Frank Kernan were on the team but they were defeated by Kerry.
Before playing Australian rules he played Gaelic football with the Kerry minor (Under-18) team which reached the final of the 1982 All-Ireland Minor Football Championship and with the Listowel Emmets club - the same club as Tadhg Kennelly.

Cavan were aiming for three consecutive All-Ireland football titles, having beaten Kerry at America's Polo Grounds in 1947 and beaten Mayo at Croke Park in 1948.
