It was the group's second number-one hit on the U.S. charts (the first being 1981's "Keep on Loving You", also written by Kevin Cronin) and reached number sixteen in the UK.

It begins with Kevin Cronin playing the piano, attempting to find the key in which he can best sing the song (starting off in G major, he later decides he can sing it better in A).
Cronin recorded one album with the band, 1972's R.E.O./T.W.O., but left the band soon after, because of missed rehearsals and creative disagreements.

Ridin' the Storm Out was the band's third release with as many singers; this time Mike Murphy took the microphone.

Where the original studio version clocked in at only 3:57, live performances include a bass solo in addition to the song's piano and guitar solos, and an extended interlude where lead vocalist Kevin Cronin tells a story that leads up to a "conversation" between him and lead guitarist Gary Richrath (later Dave Amato) where the guitarist's side consists of guitar solos while Kevin's side is scat vocals.
The album introduced Kevin Cronin as vocalist and contributing song writer to the band, replacing Terry Luttrell.
