The Misl was founded by Sardar Gulab Singh Dallewalia (d. 1759), who belonged to the Khatri community.

Bardhaman Raj was founded in 1657 by Sangam Rai, of a Hindu Khatri family of Kotli in Lahore, Punjab, whose descendants served in turn the Mughal Emperors and the British government.
Other members of this organization included Chudaprasad Sharma, Govinda Prasad Sharma, Puskar Nath Upreti, Mukunda Nath Rimal, Bal Bahadur Pandey, Druba Prasad Dawade, Fadindra Nath Satyal, Hari Krishna Shrestha, Chakra Bahadur Khatri, Ganesh Man Singh, Keshav Khatri, Ramji Shrestha, Chandraman Shrestha, and also King JayaPrithivi Bahadur Sing of Bajhang.
