The Khoshuts of the Zunghar Khanate remained influential until the Qing annihilated them in 1755.
In 1641 the leader of the Khoshut Mongols of the Kokonor region, Gushri Khan, set out from his home area and attacked the king of Beri in Kham (East Tibet), who was a practitioner of the Bön religion and persecuted Buddhist lamas.

Comprising the Khoshut (Хошууд Hošuud), Choros or Ölöt (Өөлд Ööld), Torghut (Торгууд Torguud), and Dörbet (Дөрвөд Dörvöd) tribes, they were dubbed Kalmyk or Kalmak, which means "remnant" or "to remain", by their western Turkic neighbors.
