In 1367, Kim Yong and Kim Il traveled as representative of Goryeo to the court of thee Ashikaga shogunate.
He received command of the 2nd Army Corps in October 1994 and held it until April 2007, when he was appointed Chief of the General Staff replacing Kim Yong-chun, who had been appointed defence minister.
In December 2011, after the leader's death, he was ranked 5th among members of the Kim Jong-il funeral committee, immediately after Kim Jong-un and the Politburo Presidium members (Kim Yong-nam, Choe Yong-rim and Ri Yong-ho), signalling his powerful position in the new leadership.

Despite not playing for South Korea since 2008, he is considered one of South Korea's best goalkeepers even to the point where he has been nicknamed by fans as "Yong Der Sar" in reference to former Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar of Manchester United and the Netherlands.

On 21 August 2013, Kim brilliantly denied Brazilian Bruno César of Al-Alhi, during the start of the second half, from a free-kick spot from the middle of their half when he dove to save ball which many fans declared it as a "super save."
The expansion of Japanese offensives during the Pacific War in 1942 led to the cessation of sporting competitions in the country and Kim's spell at Pyeongyang FC came to an end.

Kim's performance, attendance and behaviour slipped to the point he was expelled from the school, so he began attending a YMCA school where he was able to continue playing the game.

During the war he was involved in several military sides, founding the Army Reserve Academy FC side as player-coach in 1950, and then joining the Republic of Korea Air Force FC in mid-1951.
