Kirkby Stephen

There are monuments to the Musgrave and Wharton families, but the most important of several other ancient monuments in the church is a relief of the Norse god Loki, who is shown bound and chained.


Arkengarthdale

Beyond Tan Hill, the road divides again, heading westward to Brough, south to Keld and south-west to Kirkby Stephen.

Pennine Bridleway

In 2000 there was a proposal for an extension to the Pennine Bridleway from Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria to Byrness, Northumberland.

South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway

A rival scheme, the Yorkshire & Glasgow Union Railway, left the ECML at Thirsk, crossed the Pennines to Hawes, then Kirkby Stephen, Appleby and so reached Clifton.
