The A87 road passes through the village, continuing on along the north coast of Loch Duich, passing Dornie, Nostie and Kirkton on to Kyle of Lochalsh.
St Mary's is in a residential area of Dundee located in the extreme northwest of the city, to the north of Ardler and west of Kirkton.

James Busby (1801 – 1871) widely regarded as the "father" of the Australian wine industry planted his first grape vines on his property "Kirkton", which is located at Belford in the Branxton district.
The stone was initially erected at the unidentified "Kirkton Church", either in Dunnichen or in Letham, then it was moved to the garden of Dunnichen House.
The holotype was collected in the East Kirkton Quarry, near Bathgate of West Lothian, from "Bed 82" East Kirkton Limestone of the Bathgate Hills Volcanic Formation, dating to the Brigantian substage, of the late Viséan stage, of the Dinantian series (Early Carboniferous), about 333-328.3 million years ago.
He married, on 13 March 1665, Euphemia, daughter of John Conqueror of Friarton, Kirkton Hill, Perth.
