After the end of World War II, Ambrose Askin became a fish fryer in Knottingley, living at 4 Cardwell Terrace, Foundry Lane, Knottingley.
The River Aire runs to the south of the parish, and the town of Knottingley is the other side of the river in West Yorkshire.
Buses run from the bus station around the town of Castleford and as far a field as Leeds, Knottingley, Tadcaster, Barnsley, Pontefract, Morley and Wakefield.
The Swinton and Knottingley Joint Railway was a British railway company formed to connect the Midland and Great Central lines at Swinton, north of Rotherham, with the North Eastern Railway at Ferrybridge, near Knottingley, a distance of sixteen miles, opening up a more direct route between York and the Sheffield area.
