During the Polish Defensive War of 1939 the town was the scene of heavy fighting between the Polish 60th Infantry Division of Colonel Adam Epler and the German XIX Panzer Corps of General Heinz Guderian.
It took place between May 17–25, 1863 in the village of Horki near Kobryn, Russian Empire (now Belarus).
Located on the southern bank of the Prypiat and at the Kobryn-Kovel road, it is close to the modern borders with Poland and Ukraine.
