Six members of the former parliament lost their seats including Prime Minister Koloa Talake and the Speaker, Tomu Sione.

Faimalaga Luka became the prime minister on 24 February 2001 until he was replaced by Koloa Talake after a vote of no confidence on 14 December 2001.
Within a year of taking office, Luka lost a vote of no confidence on 14 December 2001 and was forced to resign as Prime Minister, being replaced by Koloa Talake.
Saufatu Sopoanga was appointed Prime Minister after the election as the previous Prime Minister Koloa Talake lost his seat.
