The cnoidal wave solutions were derived by Korteweg and de Vries, in their 1895 paper in which they also propose their dispersive long-wave equation, now known as the Korteweg–de Vries equation.
An experiment conducted aboard the International Space Station in 2003 (Miscible Fluids in Microgravity) was mounted to prove one of Korteweg's theories.
Tom H. Koornwinder (born 19 September 1943, Rotterdam) is a Dutch mathematician at the Korteweg-de Vries Institute of Mathematics who introduced Koornwinder polynomials.
