In the beginning of 1939 he was chosen for the general staff officer training at the Kriegsakademie, but he could not take part because of the beginning of World War II.

From autumn of 1940 to 1041 in the rank of a Hauptmann he visited the general staff officer training at the Kriegsakademie in Berlin.
From 1830 to 1837 he attended the Allgemeine Kriegsakademie at Berlin, and in 1841, while still a subaltern, he was posted to the great General Staff, in which he afterwards directed the topographical section.
At the close of the war he continued to serve on the general staff, and also lectured at the War Academy (Kriegsakademie).
Schlichting was born in Berlin, the son of a Prussian general who was then the commander of the Kriegsakademie (War Academy).
From 1850 to 1867, he taught history classes at the Kriegsakademie (War Academy of Berlin).
