The speakers of Alawa are mainly adults, and most Alawa speak Kriol, though there are Alawa language revival efforts at the Minyeri School in the Alawa community.
Of these families; five were refugees (Alfaro family, UmaƱa, Cruz, Echeverria, Barrera, Hernandez, and Zometa), one was Belizean Kriol (Mr. Scott and his family) and a Mennonite family (Mr. Duek & Family).
