In the late 14th century the village belonged to Spytek of Melsztyn, and it gained town rights some time between 1333 - 1370.
It was the seat of a large county, with such towns, as Proszowice, Słomniki and Książ Wielki.
For the Piotr Myszkowski family he erected a new palace in Książ Wielki (1585–1595), which however has not survived to our times.
