Alan Villatoro was born and raised in Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
A unique case in the scene is the rock band Sobrevivencia from Huehuetenango whose lyrics are sung in Mam, a Mayan language spoken in the Guatemalan northwest.
However, in November 2009, he announced his departure due to financial complications at the Huehuetenango club.
The city currently boasts one Guatemalan top level football side with Peñarol La Mesilla (Halcones now) in the Liga Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala.
The group is centered out of Huehuetenango ("Land of the Old") some 5 km from the original stand off site at Zaculeu.

Momostenango borders to the North with the municipalities of Malacatancito (Huehuetenango, San Bartolo and Santa Lucía La Reforma, to its South with San Francisco El Alto and the municipality of Totonicapán, to the East with Santa María Chiquimula, and to the West with San Carlos Sija (Quezaltenango).
According to 1998 estimates compiled by SIL International in Ethnologue, there were approximately 77,700 native speakers, primarily in the Huehuetenango Department of Guatemala.
The municipality is 81 km from Guatemala City, situated between the municipalities of Escuintla, Santa Lucía Cotzumalguapa, and La Democracia, linked to Siquinalá by road, which continues to the sea at Sipacate, in the municipality of La Gomera.
