It was abandoned and destroyed as a result of the War of Arauco in 1600, and refounded in 1882 under the name Carahue.

After the defeat at the Battle of Tucapel, the Spanish had hurriedly reorganized their forces, reinforcing fort La Imperial for its defense and abandoning Confines and Arauco in order to strengthen Concepción.
These battles allowed to Valdiva to build cities on Indian territories such as Concepcion in 1550, La Imperial, Valdivia in 1552, Villarrica in 1552 and Los Confines in 1553.
