2 unusual facts about Labasa


Labasa, Fiji

Labasa's current Mayor, elected on 28 October 2005 following the municipal election to the town council one week earlier, is Dr Pradeep Singh of the Fiji Labour Party (FLP).

The town itself is located on a delta formed by three rivers – the Wailevu, the Labasa (after which the town is named), and the Qawa.


Fiji Labour Party

It also won seats on the Labasa, Nadi, and Ba Town Councils, and subsequently secured a seat on the Lautoka City Council at a by-election.

The Mayoralty changed hands in six municipalities, as party political control changed hands in the Councils of Lami, Labasa, Levuka, Savusavu, and Nasinu.

Jagannath Sami

Sami became known nationally as a brilliant soccer player when he, together with three of his brothers (known as the Sami brothers), helped lift his home soccer district team of Labasa from a struggling first division side to a serious contender for the Fiji Football Association competitions in the premier division, in the 1970s.

James Madhavan

Unlike, Viti Levu where it was mainly supported by South Indians, the Maha Sangh in Labasa had support from a wide cross-section of the Fiji Indian community.

Labasa College

In light of almost all that stands correct for an institution like Labasa College, an adaptation of 'Where the Mind is Without Fear' by Rabindranath Tagore is the official Song / Prayer of the College.

Labasa F.C.

Labasa did not join the National Association when it was formed, in 1938, due to the distance of Labasa from the main island of Viti Levu, where all, except one, club was based.

Labasa Kisan Sangh

As negotiatians began for the 1950 cane contract, the Kisan Sangh decided to spread its activities to the Northern Division and the Labasa Kisan Sangh was formed with support from Viti Levu.

Municipal elections in Fiji

A number of other parties operating only at the municipal level contested other town councils, some of them successfully, winning control of councils in Labasa, Lami, Levuka, Nausori, Savusavu, and Tavua.

Shiromaniam Madhavan

He was born in Labasa, Fiji and was the son of the well known Vanua Levu politician, James Madhavan, who served in the Legislative Council of Fiji for a long time.

Shivlal Nagindas

His father, an immigrant from Mumbai (Bombay), India, arrived in Fiji in 1929 and established a tailoring and upholstery business in Labasa, on the northern island of Vanua Levu.

Suliasi Kurulo

He is President of the Christian Mission Fellowship (CMF), an international denomination based in Fiji, and is involved with the World Harvest Centre at Newtown, Trinity Television, Christian Radio Station FM97, and the World Harvest Bible College in Labasa.

Taito Waqavakatoga

He is better known for his proactive role in organising the harvest of sugar cane in the Labasa and Seaqaqa districts, during a harvest boycott by farmers protesting the 1987 1987 military takeover by Sitiveni Rabuka.

Vijay Chand

In 2009, after the military administration of Frank Bainimarama dismissed all city and town councils, Chand was appointed the administrator of Labasa and Savusavu towns in Vanua Levu.
