It was formed from stars of what is today the constellations Lacerta and western Andromeda.

In 1777 Petrus Camper thought it was a lizard (Lacerta), and at that time there was no differentiation between reptiles and amphibians by the scientific community.
The lizard genus Lacerta and fish genus Phoxinus are the only other known examples of diploid-triploid mosaicism.
