It is founded on 2 square kilometres of land, at the eastern foot of the Gamo mountains and adjacent to the vast low lying land stretching towards Lake Abaya which is part of the East African Rift valley.
It was named in 1896 as Lake Margherita by the Italian explorer Vittorio Bottego, the first European to visit the lake, to honor the wife of king Umberto I of Italy, Queen Margherita.
