Former State Senator Clifford Cleveland Brooks in 1920 purchased the Botany Bay plantation on Lake Bruin.
Prior to his legislative service, the couple relocated to St. Joseph and resided on scenic Lake Bruin, an oxbow lake of the Mississippi River.
