The term "canal tunnel" does not seem to be commonly applied to tunnels used to conduct water (for irrigation, water supply, etc.), such as the 48 km long Arpa-Sevan tunnel in Armenia (see List of longest tunnels in the world), or a number of tunnels on the Irtysh–Karamay–Ürümqi Canal in China.

Erebuni Fortress

Van as a root is also present in numerous other placenames in historical Armenia, including the city Van, Lake Sevan, and Nakhichevan, so it is probable that the van in Yerevan is another direct translation of the root.
