MacNeice spent his first week in Reykjavik, after which the two poets took part in an expedition to circumnavigate the Langjökull (or Long Glacier) on horseback.
The same is true for the lake Hvítárvatn to the east: ⅔ of its waters appear to come from Langjökull by underwater channels

In popular culture, the glacier may be best known as the place where the pieces of the nuclear-blasted Iron Giant fall in the 1999 animated science fiction film, The Iron Giant, before it reassembles itself in the final scene of the movie.

However research has shown that large quantities of water flow in sub-surface streams to lake Þingvallavatn (some 50 km to the south and easily accessible to tourists) and reappear in springs in and around the lake, while the same happens on the west side, giving rise to various tributaries of the Hvítá River as well as some rivers flowing north towards Húnaflói.

Hraunfossar (Borgarfjörður, western Iceland) is a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 900 metres out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under the glacier Langjökull.
About 50 kilometers north of the Þingvallavatn Lake lies the home of Iceland's second largest glacier Lángjökull.
