3D cell culture

Early studies in the 80’s, led by Mina Bissell from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, highlighted the importance of 3D techniques for creating accurate in vitro culturing models.

Tau neutrino

Its existence was immediately implied after the tau particle was detected in a series of experiments between 1974 and 1977 by Martin Lewis Perl with his colleagues at the SLACLBL group.

Frédéric Y. Bois

During a joint appointment at the California Environmental Protection Agency and at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory he developed, in collaboration with Andrew Gelman, the application of Bayesian numerical approaches to multilevel PBPK models.

He then held joint appointments at the California Environmental Protection Agency (under the direction of Dr. Lauren Zeise) and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (in the group of Dr. Joan Daisey).

Gammasphere

Gammasphere was built in the early 1990s and has operated at the 88-inch cyclotron at Berkeley National Laboratory and at Argonne National Laboratory.

Helen Vaughn Michel

Her work with Frank Asaro at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory at the University of California (Berkeley) is particularly noteworthy as it includes the dating of Drake's Plate of Brass as well as the Alvarez hypothesis, the hypothesis that posits the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event.

Jean Fréchet

Joint Genome Institute

The U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI), located in Walnut Creek, California, was created in 1997 to unite the expertise and resources in genome mapping, DNA sequencing, technology development, and information sciences pioneered at the DOE genome centers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

Kasian Franks

Franks worked at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Life Sciences Division, as a Genomic Research Scientist from 2002–2005, where, along with Raf Podowski, and Connie Myers, he developed the technology behind SeeqPod.

Later he went on to start SeeqPod Inc. a music search, discovery and pattern matching company in which the U.S. Department of Energy, along with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, holds a 5% stake.

Mario Báncora

Thanks to the intervention of the American scientist Ernest Lawrence, Báncora was able to remain in the US after completing his studies and ended up at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was appointed member of the Berkeley Radiation Laboratory (currently known as the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory).

The concept and necessary technologies were initially developed under the leadership of Dr. Jerry Nelson at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and University of California during the 1980s, and have since spread worldwide to the point that essentially all future large optical telescopes plan to use segmented mirrors.

It is based at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California and involves Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Frederick Seitz Materials Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as well as FEI and CEOS companies, and is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Nearby Supernova Factory project, based at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, also has its Supernova Integrated Field Spectrograph (SNIFS) instrument mounted on UH88.
