Ardeşen

Ardeşen (Laz: არტაშენი/Art'aşeni or არდაშენი/Ardaşeni; Georgian: არტაშენი/Artasheni or არდაშენი/Ardasheni) is a town and district of Rize Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey, 48 km along the coast road from the city of Rize.

The income from tea growing has brought better amenities to Ardeşen but the traditional rural lifestyle persists; many of the people in the countryside are ethnic Laz and the older generations in particular continue to speak the Laz language although their traditional clothing has disappeared with the ban on growing hemp.

Black Sea Region

Though the overwhelming majority is Turkish, the east of the region is also inhabited by the Laz, a people who speak a Georgian dialect and converted to Islam from Georgian Orthodoxy in the late Ottoman period as well as Muslim Georgians, also the Hemsin, Armenian converts to Islam, and Pontic Greeks, who converted to Islam in 17th century.

Mapavri was long occupied by the Laz community, and was part of the Roman Empire and then the Empire of Trebizond until was brought within the Ottoman Empire by Mehmet II in 1461, although this coast has always been vulnerable to invaders from across the nearby Caucasus.
