Lee Botts, a prominent Great Lakes environmentalist and a senior official in the administration of President Jimmy Carter, was editor of the Herald in the early 1960s.

Botts is a board member emerita of the Alliance for the Great Lakes, formerly served on the board of the Delta Institute and the Save the Dunes Council, and continues as an advisor to other environmental groups including the Shirley Heinze Land Trust.
