In 1904, Smith was admitted to the New York State Bar Association and commenced his practice in New York City, working for the Legal Aid Society.
While at Hull House, Binford became interested in criminal justice and children's issues, becoming the Director of the Legal Aid Society when it was established at Hull House in 1906.

She founded her own law firm, becoming active in the New York Democratic State Committee, the New York City Bar Association, the Legal Aid Society, the New York chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, and the Legal Defense Fund of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
After studying Law at the University of Hawaii, he served as legal director for the ACLU, worked with the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii and the Life Foundation, and was a member of the state's Ethics Committee.
