The beginnings go back to at least as far as the first European contact with the Americas, when Leif Erikson established a short-lived settlement called Vinland in present day Newfoundland.
His sculptures at the Minnesota State Capitol include the Knute Nelson Monument and Leif Erikson on the capitol grounds, and General John B. Sanborn and Colonel Alexander Wilkin in the rotunda.
During his appearance at the Norse-American Centennial in 1925, President Calvin Coolidge gave recognition to Leif Erikson as the Discoverer of America due to research by Norwegian-American scholars such as Knut Gjerset and Ludvig Hektoen.
