Tragically, he was driving from his home in Gateshead to his brother's funeral in Lesbury, in northern Northumberland, when he had a fatal road accident.
In the 18th century, a schoolroom and master's house were built, paid for by Algernon Percy, 4th Duke of Northumberland.
The church was consecrated by Charles Baring Bishop of Durham on Tuesday November 6 1876, two months later on February 7 1877 Alnmouth became a separate parish when it was divided from the parish of Lesbury.
