Daihachiro Sato (June 1, 1932 – May 28, 2008) was a Japanesemathematician who was awarded the Lester R. Ford Award in 1976 for his work in number theory, specifically on his work in the Diophantine representation of prime numbers.
He is a two-time winner of the Mathematical Association of America's Lester R. Ford Award for expository writing, in 1991 for his paper "Random intervals" with Joyce Justicz and Peter Winkler, and in 2001 for his paper "When Close is Close Enough".
In 1927 the 6th District encompassed the Hyde Park and Angeles Mesa annexations and Vermont Avenue south to 62nd Street as well as a shoestring strip leading to Westchester, Mines Field and the Hyperion sewage screening plant.
His mother Doris lent the medal to U.S. Army officer and NASA astronaut Douglas H. Wheelock to take on his June 2010 launch to the International Space Station.
He has received numerous awards, among them the Gordon Bell Prize and Householder Prize (1990), the Chauvenet Prize (1998), the Edgerly Science Partnership Award (1999), the SIAM Activity Group on Linear Algebra Prize (2000), and the Lester R. Ford Award, (2005, with Gilbert Strang).
