He died while on a visit in Washington, D.C., on February 18, 1900; interment in Leyden Hill Cemetery, Port Leyden, New York.
The Town of Leyden gave up much of its territory to form new towns such as the Towns of Watson (1851) and Lewis (1852).

Although he was extremely popular, both in front of the camera and behind the microphone, Leyden's chronic health problems limited his on-screen work in the latter half of the 1960s (Bill Cullen and Larry Blyden filled in for Leyden on You're Putting Me On, with Blyden becoming the permanent host of the show when Leyden suffered a cerebral hemorrhage in September 1969).

After returning home following the war, Leyden worked as a radio announcer on KMPC in Los Angeles and later served announcer for the syndicated radio series The Liberace Program (1954–55) before moving over to television, where he hosted several game shows, the most successful of which was It Could Be You.
Leyden jars or more powerful devices employing flat glass plates alternating with foil conductors were used exclusively up until about 1900, when the invention of wireless (radio) created a demand for standard capacitors, and the steady move to higher frequencies required capacitors with lower inductance.
The same year he visited Stockholm, where he made the acquaintance of Peter, son of Hugo Grotius, and in 1637 Hamburg, Upsala, Copenhagen, Leyden, and Amsterdam.
Born in London, the son of Levy Salomons of St Mary Axe and Frant, Sussex and Matilda de Metz of Leyden (married in 1795), he followed his father into business in the City of London, where he was a successful banker.

Thence he went over to Paris to attend the Hôtel-Dieu, and subsequently to Leyden, where he studied under Herman Boerhaave, and took his degree of M.D., but his name is omitted from the Album Studiosorum Academiæ Lugd. Bat., printed in 1875.
He studied medicine at Helmstedt, Groningen and Leyden and afterwards traveled to Italy, France and England for scientific studies.

Sometime prior to 1923, the east–west highway connecting West Leyden to Boonville was selected to become a state highway by New York State Department of Highways Commissioner Frederick Stuart Greene, who had drawn up a map of proposed state highways in Oneida County and presented it to the New York State Legislature for approval.
Following the custom of Belgian students he did not confine himself to the courses at Catholic University of Leuven (French: Louvain) but went to Paris to hear Julius Oppert, Émile Egger, and Henri Patin, and to Berlin, Utrecht, and Leyden, where he followed the courses of Cobet.

Durie, after landing at Bordeaux, went to Holland, where he was admitted first minister of the Scottish church at Leyden, where he died in September 1616.

He studied botany from 1686 to 1688 in Paris under Joseph Pitton de Tournefort and was a friend and pupil of Paul Hermann in Leyden from 1688 to 1689 who also studied with Tournefort at this time.
