The son of Francisco Convit y Martí, a Spaniard with Catalonian roots who was nationalised in Venezuela, Convit was born in La Pastora, Libertador Municipality, Caracas.
Opponents of Chavez described the move as a deliberate negation of the popular vote, while supporters described the political and budgetary reorganization as an "act of justice" for Libertador Bolivarian Municipality, the largest and poorest of the five municipalities making up Caracas.
The Libertador Municipality is located in the mid-north of the country surrounded by the mountain El Ávila which is part of the Venezuelan central range.
