Neder-Betuwe

The Neder-Betuwe area is along the northernmost border or Limes of the Roman empire.


Borders of the Roman Empire

In the south of Mauritania Tingitana Romans made a limes in the third century, just north of the area of actual Casablanca near Sala and stretching to Volubilis.

Diessenhofen

A hoard of coins from the Roman era (251-270), and the remains of three towers of the Danube-Iller-Rhein Limes (4th century) show Roman settlements in the area.

Kindrogan House

A number of fine trees and avenues survive from in the old estate policies, including several fine Wellintonias, oaks, limes lining the main drives, yews and specimen sycamores beside the River Ardle.

Reisjärvi

A very remarkable sight of Reisjärvi nature is probably the northernmost in Finland habitat of wild Small-leaved Lime (Tilia cordata), 63° 38′ N. There have still been growing 7 old long-boled limes in mixed forest on cape Kokkoniemi jutting out into lake Pitkäjärvi.

Roman military frontiers and fortifications

The so-called Limes Britannicus is perhaps the best example of the ultimate limes - like the Great Wall of China, it was an attempt to construct a continuous man-made fortification along the length of an entire border, a massive undertaking.

Royal Hospital Haslar

Dr James Lind (1716–1794), a leading physician at Haslar from 1758 till 1785, played a major part in discovering a cure for scurvy, not least through his pioneering use of a double blind methodology with Vitamin C supplements (limes).
