Through his work in private practice he became interested in emergency medicine and in 1980, moved to North Carolina where he practiced emergency medicine in three community hospitals: Lincoln County Hospital, Cleveland Memorial and Catawba Valley Medical Center.
The Viking Way passes east-west along the south edge of the hospital.

Newark Hospital is closing its A&E facilities in April 2011, and just over half of patients that would have been sent to Newark by ambulance, will now go to Lincoln, via the dual-carriageway A46.
After receiving hospital treatment at Lincoln County Hospital he made a full recovery; however it reignited concern over the danger of snakes.
