The administrative centre of the empire was at various times at Sayong Pinang, Kota Kara, Seluyut, Johor Lama, Batu Sawar and Kota Tinggi; all on mainland Johor and later at Riau and Lingga.
It was from Lingga Roads that the main Japanese southern striking force deployed for the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
Sri Aman Division was originally made up of four districts, which were Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Betong, and Saratok together with 9 smaller districts including Pantu, Lingga, Maludam, Engkilili, Spaoh, Debak, Pusa and Roban.
