The city was officially recognized by the Governor of Pennsylvania on June 18, 1992.
On April 10, 1974, Governor Milton J. Shapp signed their bill, making the Pennsylvania firefly their state's official insect.

The race is named for Tom Ridge, who was the Governor of the State of Pennsylvania from 1995 to 2001.
