The player controls characters from the Mario franchise.
During the game, players take control of one of eight Mario franchise characters and drive karts around tracks with a Mario franchise theme.

Mario Party 8 has fourteen playable characters: Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Daisy, Yoshi, Birdo, Princess Peach, Toadette, Wario, Waluigi, Boo, Dry Bones, Blooper, and Hammer Bro., with the latter two being unlockable.
