2 unusual facts about Little Manila


Little Manila, Stockton, California

Filipino labor leaders like Larry Itliong, Andy Imutan, Chris Mensalvas, Ernesto Mangaoang, Carlos Bulosan and Philip Vera Cruz all worked out of Stockton at one time or another.

These courageous Filipino farm workers and labor leaders are the unsung heroes behind the success of the UFW and its iconic leader Cesar Chavez.


Five Corners, Jersey City

The many stores around the intersection create a Little Manila including one of the first Filipino American groceries, Phil-Am Food Mart (now known as Phil-Am Merchandising and Casa Victoria) and The Filipino Channel.

Harsimus

A section of Grove Street was renamed Manila Avenue in recognition of the city's resident Overseas Filipino, Henderson Street (renamed Marin Boulevard for the first governor of Puerto Rico Luis Muñoz Marín), to reflect the influx of Puerto Rican and Filipino residents, and Railroad Avenue to now Columbus Drive and acknowledge the still large Italian population.
