People including Zhang Boling (张伯苓), Liu Yazi (柳亚子) and Weng Wenhao (翁文灏) once had lived here, while Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, Chiang Kai-shek, Chiang Ching-kuo, Guo moruo and Ma Yinchu (马寅初) had been here before to visit their friends.
After the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War in 1937, Liu initially remained in Shanghai, but fled first to Hong Kong, then in 1941 to Guilin, and for the last years of the war to China's wartime capital, Chongqing.

Chen Qubing (陳去病, 1874–1933, a native from Suzhou), Gao Xu (高旭, 1877-1925, a native from current Shanghai Jinshan District), and Liu Yazi (柳亞子, 1887-1958, a native of Suzhou) were three founding fathers of society.
Many celebrities, including Shi Liang, He Luting, Zhu Xuefan, Liu Yazi and Qian Xiaoshan were among his friends at the time.
