Near the church is a veteran yew that was believed to have been used as the parish stocks in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The community of Gwernyfed was established in 1985 through the merger of the former Aberllynfi community, the greater part of the former Tre-goed & Felindre community, and small parts of the Bronllys and former Llanelieu communities.
