2 unusual facts about Local option

Local option

This is particularly evident in Toronto's Junction neighbourhood, part of which remained notoriously dry as late as 2000, the last area of Ontario to repeal prohibition.

Montgomery County, Maryland, for example, has used local option to establish its alcohol control monopoly within its borders.

Ontario Temperance Act

The Act was finally repealed in 1927, but some communities maintained a ban on the sale of liquor under local option until the 1970s and one part of The Junction neighbourhood of Toronto remained "dry" until 2000, largely due to the efforts of socialist, and former Ontario CCF Member of Provincial Parliament for High Park, William Temple.

William Alexander Baird

Following his departure from city council, Baird remained involved in the West York Conservative Association, and was the main in-party opposition to the incumbent MPP Forbes Godfrey, as the two disagreed on the issue of local option which enabled the ward to impose a ban on alcohol sales.
