Coifi mounted a stallion and rode from the king's council (which according to local tradition was held at the royal summer encampment at Londsborough), to the Great temple of Woden at Goodmanham where he cast a spear into the altar before burning the temple to the ground, as the people watched and thought him mad.

The last Chaplin, Henry, led an extravagant lifestyle and had political ambitions; this lifestyle coupled to the falling revenues from farms led him ever into debt until finally in 1892, the estate passed to the principal mortgagee Charles Denison, 1st Earl of Londesborough.
In early life he became secretary to William Cobbett; in 1838 to the London and Greenwich Railway Company; and later to Lord Albert Conyngham (afterwards Lord Londesborough).

He was educated at Glasgow High School, then from 1872 privately by Revd Richard Wilton in Londesborough in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
