On summer Saturdays local services are replaced by First Great Western trains from London Paddington and CrossCountry trains from the North of England and the Scottish Lowlands, which do not stop at intermediate stations between Bodmin Parkway/Par and Newquay.
The two former GWR main lines from London Paddington: the Great Western Main Line (GWML) of 1838-1841 to Bristol Temple Meads railway station (passing through Slough, Reading and Swindon), and the 1903 New North Main Line (NNML) via Greenford to Northolt Junction, which is the start of the Great Western and Great Central Joint Railway line, split at Old Oak junction.

The crash occurred after the 10:32 Great Western Trains passenger train from Swansea to London Paddington, worked by power cars 43173 + 43163 and operating with a defective Automatic Warning System (AWS), passed a red (danger) signal (SPAD), preceded by two cautionary signals, and collided with a freight train entering Southall goods yard shortly before 13:20 local time.
From Windsor to London Waterloo takes about 55 minutes, some 20 minutes longer than the quickest journeys to London Paddington from the other station at Windsor, Windsor & Eton Central, although according to Network Rail timetables, the journey time to many central London locations is similar from both stations.

Spital railway station, on the former main line from Birkenhead Woodside to London Paddington, is situated near Bebington on the Wirral Peninsula, England in the small suburb of Spital.
Owned by Network Rail under depot code PM, it is leased to train operator First Great Western, and has been used since their introduction for the maintenance of InterCity 125 trains operating between London Paddington, Bristol and South Wales.
