The station is situated on the East Coast Main Line, served by First ScotRail and Arriva CrossCountry with regular services running between Edinburgh Waverley and Aberdeen.
South West - Birmingham - the North West (CrossCountry): Penzance — Birmingham — Glasgow direct (ceased after the change of CrossCountry franchise in 2007)
CrossCountry use Class 220 'Voyager', Class 221 'Super Voyager' DEMUs and HST on their services that continue from Edinburgh Waverley to Glasgow Central.
On summer Saturdays local services are replaced by First Great Western trains from London Paddington and CrossCountry trains from the North of England and the Scottish Lowlands, which do not stop at intermediate stations between Bodmin Parkway/Par and Newquay.
The line is also an important through route for longer distance passenger and freight services: CrossCountry services from Bournemouth and Southampton to Birmingham and the North of England and freight trains between Southampton Docks and the Midlands use the line.
It is also served by CrossCountry trains and by the West Somerset Railway on special event days and by mainline steam excursions.
As this station is part of the West Coast Main Line to Carstairs, which diverges at Mid Calder Junction, a colourful variety of CrossCountry Class 220 "Voyager", Virgin Trains Class 221 "Super Voyager", Class 390 "Pendolino" and East Coast InterCity 225 can also be seen.
