Born in Chatsworth, California, he was a graduate of Los Angeles Valley College, California State University-Northridge, and Chatsworth High School, Markas won four Golden Mike Awards, two Associated Press Sportscasting Awards, and the 2008 Radio Play-by-Play Award from the Southern California Broadcasters Association.
It is home to Los Angeles Valley College, Ulysses S. Grant High School, and The Great Wall of Los Angeles, a half mile-long mural painted on one of the concrete sides of the Tujunga Wash, a flood-control channel, portraying the history of California.
The first Academic Freedom Award, the California Federation of Teachers, 1975 after being reinstated by a unanimous decision of the Supreme Court of California to her tenured teaching position at Los Angeles Valley College from which Metzger had been fired in 1969.
