Born on a farm in Galesburg, Illinois, he attended Knox College from 1901 to 1903 and received a DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery) degree from the Chicago College of Dental Surgery, which later became the Loyola University Chicago Dental School.

He currently serves as an adjunct professor at The Institute of World Politics in Washington, D.C., and has taught courses at the University of Chicago, Rosary College, and Loyola University.
In 1963, Barnett tried to prevent the men's basketball team of Mississippi State University from playing an NCAA Tournament game against the racially-integrated team from Loyola of Chicago.
Presently, camps are held every summer at several college campuses throughout the United States, including Stanford University, UCLA, Loyola Marymount University, UC Berkeley, Wake Forest University, Loyola University Chicago, Kent State University, University of South Florida, and Brown University.
