It is south of Luba, the second-largest town on the island, and just north of the Luba Crater Scientific Reserve.
Since 1996 a joint research program on the primate population has been carried out by Arcadia University of the US and the National University of Equatorial Guinea.

A Spanish expedition of 2007 from the Technical University of Madrid is thought to be the first to have crossed the crater, considered by the local people to be a place where spirits dwell.
As of 2010 a new highway was under construction from Luba via Belebú Balachá through the Luba Crater Scientific Reserve to Ureca near the south coast.
