This was the first time in school history that the football team had a full-time head coach (Lucius Littauer coached on several occasions in 1881, but did not coach the team full-time).
Littauer graduated from Harvard University in 1878 and was the school's first head football coach, guiding the Crimson to a record of 5–1–2 in 1881.

Littauer was elected as a Republican to the Fifty-fifth and to the four succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1897 – March 3, 1907).
