In October 2010, the Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov officially opened a 31 km section of the Maritsa motorway between the towns of Harmanli and Lyubimets.
Opened in the 1870s, the station forms part of the Lyubimets–Belovo railway, which also links Sofia, capital city of Bulgaria, with Istanbul, the largest city of Turkey.
