Some of the smaller wind instruments were also sung into, and the sound of the poi (raupo ball swung on the end of a flax cord) provided a rhythmic accompaniment to waiata poi.

In place of these sounds, Jayrem's repertoire extended into Urban Pasifika and Māori music, as well as folk/roots and reggae.
He was recognised for his commitment to the martial art Mau rākau at the 2012 National Waiata Māori Music Awards, where he received the Keeper of Traditions Award.
